Welcome to the Deeper Dive Podcast

brought to you by the OC Church of Christ.

2

:

The Deeper Dive Podcast is about going

deeper into God's word, learning new

3

:

insights and taking a fresh look at

the verses that impact our daily lives.

4

:

Today's episode is part two to

The "Introduction to Spirituality"

5

:

from our series, "Spirituality

101" by Robert Carrillo.

6

:

So get your scuba gear and

let's dive deep into God's word.

7

:

Here's Robert Carrillo.

8

:

Robert: Hello everybody, Robert

Carrillo here, and we're continuing

9

:

in our Spirituality 101 series.

10

:

I want to thank you for taking the time

and making this a priority in your life

11

:

to grow spiritually, to look into these

things and, uh, which I believe will be

12

:

hugely rewarding and enrich your walk

with God, your, your discipleship, your

13

:

following of Jesus, and And, and growth in

spirituality and just helping you, helping

14

:

us all to become more spiritual people

and more aware of God and his spirit.

15

:

So this is a introduction to spirituality,

uh, part B, uh, the first one.

16

:

So if you have not heard the first one,

Please go back and listen to the first

17

:

one because these come consecutively.

18

:

And generally that's true.

19

:

Some of the later classes will

be topical and you can just

20

:

dive right on, right on in.

21

:

But this one is important is laying

a foundation that our foundation

22

:

is biblical, it's scriptural, it's

spiritually bound to the truth, right?

23

:

So Ephesians chapter 1 verse 17.

24

:

He says, I keep asking the God of our

Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, I

25

:

keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus

Christ, the Glorious Father, may give

26

:

you the spirit of wisdom and revelation,

so that you may know Him better.

27

:

This was Paul's prayer, his prayer

was that God would give us the

28

:

spirit of wisdom and revelation.

29

:

In other words, that He helps us to

be wise, but also to be able to see

30

:

things, the things to be revealed to us.

31

:

That we could see.

32

:

Greater things, that we could see Him,

that we could see His power at work,

33

:

that we could see the Spirit moving,

and understand things, deeper things

34

:

of God, the, the, the, the kingdom

of God that's hidden like a treasure.

35

:

Recognize the pearl of great value.

36

:

Understand that it may be small as a

mustard seed, but it will grow, that we

37

:

would see and understand these things.

38

:

That's Paul's prayer for us, so that you

may know Him better, and and so much more.

39

:

Really what the heart of

spiritual development, spiritual

40

:

formation, uh, seeking to grow

spiritually is knowing God better.

41

:

And what goes hand in hand with

that is knowing ourselves better.

42

:

In verse 18 he says, I pray that the

eyes of your heart may be enlightened

43

:

in order that you may know the

hope to which you have been called,

44

:

right, to which he has called you.

45

:

Okay, the eyes of our

heart, what does that mean?

46

:

Think about that.

47

:

The eyes of our hearts, you know, what

we see and feel, what we recognize,

48

:

what we, what we are aware of that

impacts us, that changes or affects us.

49

:

How we think, how we feel,

how we live our lives, right?

50

:

And he says, I pray that the eyes

of your heart may be enlightened

51

:

in order that you may know the

hope To which he has called you.

52

:

He wants us to know the hope.

53

:

We've got so much hope as Christians

We have so much hope as disciples

54

:

of Jesus to, to, to, of what, what

the future is going to bring, what

55

:

God is revealing to us, what he's

showing us, how he's helping us.

56

:

You know, I remember as a baby Christian,

I remember I would see people that had

57

:

been in the church for two or three or

four years, and I would just be in awe

58

:

of them, their scripture knowledge.

59

:

their knowledge of the Bible and their

ability to just pray and have these deep

60

:

prayers and, and, and I just thought, my

gosh, there's so much more like Jesus.

61

:

I'm going to become more

and more like Jesus.

62

:

And I was thinking, man, in 10 years,

I'm going to be walking on water.

63

:

I was just so excited.

64

:

And yeah, maybe a little naive.

65

:

I'm not walking on water 38 years later.

66

:

But have I grown?

67

:

Yes, I've grown a lot.

68

:

Do I have more to grow?

69

:

Yes, just like when I

was a young Christian.

70

:

I mean, I would honestly say to you, I

can honestly say to you that I am just

71

:

as excited about what I'm learning today

as I was my first week as a Christian.

72

:

I'm learning so much about God, I'm

learning so much about His Spirit,

73

:

I'm learning how to listen to Him,

how to walk with Him, how to be aware

74

:

of Him, how to see God in everything.

75

:

And it's changing me, it's

changing my heart, it's changing

76

:

how I think, and which are very

much changing the way I feel.

77

:

About things, especially valuable in

a time where the world is so full of

78

:

trouble and that trouble is knocking on

everybody's door and, and, and the value

79

:

of being happy, being able to have peace.

80

:

So, and getting to know God, but

getting to know the hope we have.

81

:

And he says, he says to which

he has called you the riches

82

:

of his glorious inheritance.

83

:

In of his glorious inheritance

in his Holy people.

84

:

Right?

85

:

The people that he has set

aside to be his people.

86

:

And his incomparably great power.

87

:

for us who believe, right?

88

:

Us who know us, who have faith in

him, who, who believe, but it's more

89

:

than just the word believe this.

90

:

I, I think the English translation

to the word belief, we just honestly,

91

:

we don't have a word powerful enough

to, to translate the Hebrew concept

92

:

of MNA or even pistos in Greek.

93

:

We don't, we don't have that a word that

really Tells you what all that means.

94

:

That those who rely on God, those

who trust God, those who acknowledge

95

:

God, those who are deeply aware of

God, that's what's packed in this.

96

:

Those who believe, right?

97

:

That power is the same as the

mighty as the mighty strength.

98

:

I mean, I love that the mighty

strength, the mighty power

99

:

of God that we have access.

100

:

So, but here's the thing is, is, is this

is what knowing him better ushers us into.

101

:

And so what spiritual Spirituality

has everything to do with just

102

:

getting to know God better.

103

:

Building that relationship with Him.

104

:

Building your connection with Him.

105

:

Which opens the door and

unleashes to so much more in life.

106

:

And, and I think right now, honestly,

We're going through so much in this world.

107

:

And, and we're, we're, I mean,

nobody's escaping challenge right now.

108

:

We're all being challenged

in different ways.

109

:

How valuable is it to be able to draw

strength from God, to be able to tap

110

:

into this, this, this, Mighty strength

that he talks about here in Ephesians

111

:

chapter 1 in 1st Corinthians 2 Paul

talks about says we do however speak a

112

:

message Of wisdom among the mature but

not the wisdom of this age or the rulers

113

:

of this age who are coming to nothing

This is what we we have a message of

114

:

wisdom of insight of understanding,

but it's it's not what the world's

115

:

teaching It's not what the world thinks.

116

:

It's not what the world is saying.

117

:

It's got nothing to do with this

world or this age It's he says no we

118

:

declare God's wisdom in a mystery that

has been hidden in that God destined

119

:

for our glory before time began.

120

:

This is a very cool passage because

he talks about the mystery of

121

:

God and the truth is We we're,

we, we don't know a whole, know

122

:

a whole lot about God's mystery.

123

:

Obviously it's mysterious, right?

124

:

Um, we tend to just shy away

from anything mysterious.

125

:

We wanna know what we can know for sure

and what we can quantify and measure

126

:

and be rely on and et cetera, et cetera.

127

:

God, there's a great mystery around

God that he is revealing things to us.

128

:

We opened that curtain when we were

baptized, when we became Christians.

129

:

And we began learning and learning,

and that learning should never stop.

130

:

Because there's always more and

more that God is teaching us.

131

:

And he says, none of us, uh, the

rulers of this age understood it.

132

:

For if they had, they would have

crucified, they wouldn't not

133

:

have crucified the Lord of Glory.

134

:

If they had any idea who Jesus was, if

they had any idea The, the, the, the, what

135

:

was happening spiritually in this world

that would have never crucified Jesus.

136

:

He says, however, as it is written, What

no eye has seen, what no ear has heard,

137

:

and what no human mind has conceived,

the things God has prepared for those

138

:

who love Him, these are the things

God has revealed to us by His Spirit.

139

:

The Spirit searches all things,

even the deep things of God.

140

:

And the main thing I want to point out

here, there's a lot we could talk about

141

:

here, but the main thing I want to point

out is that God is revealing things to us.

142

:

He's showing us things.

143

:

through his spirit.

144

:

These are things that are

only understood spiritually.

145

:

They're only spiritually

discern, discerned.

146

:

So if you're not spiritual, you're

not reading the Bible, you're

147

:

not praying much, you're not,

you're just not going to get it.

148

:

You're not going to understand it.

149

:

And your friend who, you know, that

doesn't believe in God and everything,

150

:

This is way over their head.

151

:

And, and, and they need just to start

out with the real basic teachings

152

:

of what is right and what is true.

153

:

And if not, they'll never get it.

154

:

They'll never understand these things.

155

:

They'll walk right over

the treasure in the field.

156

:

They'll discard the peril of

great value because they won't

157

:

recognize the value of it.

158

:

And it even happens to Christians

that get stunted in our growth.

159

:

It can happen to anybody.

160

:

You know, and, and I would even say

it happens to everybody at one level.

161

:

There's times where I just got stunted

and my quiet times got boring and

162

:

my relationship with God got boring

and it really became about, about

163

:

discipline, you know, about making

myself read and making myself pray.

164

:

I wasn't excited about it anymore.

165

:

I wasn't, I wasn't excited

about spending time with God.

166

:

And, and that was a problem that I

was able to identify and change and

167

:

work on my relationship with God,

work on my level of spirituality.

168

:

It happens to lots of Christians.

169

:

Just like it can happen to a marriage,

it can happen to a friendship, it

170

:

can happen to roommates, it can

happen to best friends, it can

171

:

happen to our relationship with God.

172

:

And, and so we have to be continually

growing and pushing ourselves to learn

173

:

more about God, to grow spiritually in our

ability to understand things spiritually.

174

:

Just because somebody's in the

church a long time does not

175

:

mean they're spiritually mature.

176

:

It does not mean that they're

growing, that they're advancing.

177

:

In fact, there's this strange

thing called petrified wood.

178

:

In Arizona, there's a whole forest,

and it's called the petrified forest.

179

:

And it's just, all you see is rocks.

180

:

But if you pick up the rocks,

you realize that There were once,

181

:

they were once living organisms.

182

:

It was bark from a tree, or it's a

piece of wood that turned into a rock.

183

:

It still looks like wood, it has grains

like wood, and if you glued it all back

184

:

together, it would look like a tree, but

it is not, because it has no life in it.

185

:

It has no Zoe in it.

186

:

And Jesus came giving us life.

187

:

Life, but if we're not growing,

we can become like petrified wood

188

:

where we're just, we look like a

tree, but we're not growing anymore.

189

:

In first Corinthians three,

one, he gives us this warning.

190

:

He says, brothers and sisters, I

could not address you as people who

191

:

live by the spirit, but as people who

are still worldly, mere infants in

192

:

Christ, I give you milk, not solid

food for you were not ready for it.

193

:

Indeed, you are still not ready.

194

:

You are still worldly.

195

:

For since there is jealousy and

quarreling among you, Are you not worldly?

196

:

Are you not acting like mere humans?

197

:

You know, Paul was rebuking

the church in Corinth because

198

:

they weren't growing anymore.

199

:

They got all excited.

200

:

They got baptized.

201

:

They were all filled

with zeal and excitement.

202

:

And then they just didn't grow.

203

:

And so he has to treat them

like infants in Christ again.

204

:

And he has to teach them the same thing.

205

:

The book of Hebrews, give us a warning

about not getting, being immature.

206

:

When you've been around a long time,

the truth is what happens to somebody

207

:

that stops growing spiritually?

208

:

They just become more and more religious

and they become very religious.

209

:

And the truth is being

religious is very unattractive.

210

:

And in fact, if you look at who

did Jesus argue with and fight

211

:

with, You read the Gospels, it's

always with the religious leaders.

212

:

Who had Jesus crucified?

213

:

It wasn't really the Romans.

214

:

I mean, they're the ones that

physically did it, but who incited it?

215

:

It was the religious leaders.

216

:

Religiosity and being religious, it's

gotten to a point in our world where

217

:

the world won't tolerate it at all.

218

:

The world can't stand religious people.

219

:

But that's not the same as being a

spiritual person, as being a person who

220

:

walks with God, a person who follows

Jesus closely, who's led by the Spirit.

221

:

You know, religious people follow rules,

they tend to be very judgmental, they tend

222

:

to not want to change, they hang on to

the past, back in the day we did this and

223

:

we did that, and they don't want to, you

know, they become, you know, petrified.

224

:

They become like petrified wood.

225

:

They become solid, unmolding, unchanging.

226

:

Spiritual people are always growing

and dynamic and they're changing

227

:

and they're evolving more and

more into the likeness of Jesus.

228

:

We got a class coming up about in

transformation and all about that.

229

:

Spiritual people are constantly evolving

and that's incredibly important.

230

:

Paul rebukes, uh, the Corinthians

for being, staying infantile.

231

:

We don't want to stay infantile.

232

:

The writer of Hebrews warns the

Christians that they're being, that

233

:

they're immature and by now they

should have been way more advanced.

234

:

In other words, there's an

expectation of growth, right?

235

:

In Galatians 5, 16 he says, so I say,

Walk by the Spirit, and you will not

236

:

gratify the desires of the flesh.

237

:

For the flesh desires what is

contrary to the Spirit, and the

238

:

Spirit what is contrary to the flesh.

239

:

They are in conflict with each other, so

that you are not to do whatever you want.

240

:

But if you are led by the

Spirit, You're not under the law.

241

:

So he he he Paul gives the Galatians

and you know, Paul talks a lot here

242

:

about spirituality and Galatians It's a

major topic about being truly spiritual

243

:

people versus people who are religious

that whole That tension between being a

244

:

religious person and being a spiritual

person is very clear in the book of

245

:

Galatians You know, he he rebukes them.

246

:

He said you foolish Galatians

You started out spiritually

247

:

motivated and you became worldly.

248

:

You became fleshly, really.

249

:

You became religious, basically, that

you trying to win your own salvation

250

:

by what you do and what you don't do.

251

:

And, and that kind of stuff, instead

of allowing yourself to be led by the

252

:

spirit, he says, walk by the spirit.

253

:

You know, what does that mean?

254

:

That means live your life

according to the Spirit of God.

255

:

And well, how do we know that?

256

:

Robert, we'll talk about that in a minute.

257

:

But, but it has a lot to do with what we

learn from the scriptures and how we let

258

:

the scriptures change us and impact us.

259

:

Our prayer times, our, our

listening to God, our, work.

260

:

Continual conversation with God, you know

I think one of the one of the reasons

261

:

why Michelle and I's marriage has found

so much success So we I mean it isn't

262

:

because we didn't have challenges and it

isn't because we didn't disagree about

263

:

stuff It isn't because we're exactly the

same because we are totally opposite,

264

:

but we connect every day We share hearts.

265

:

We share our struggles.

266

:

We share our love.

267

:

We share our passion We we share with

each we share our hearts with each

268

:

other every day You We talk, well,

maybe not every day, but most days,

269

:

you know, and, and, and that's a

continual pattern of our relationship.

270

:

So our relationship just gets deeper

and richer and deeper and richer.

271

:

Same thing needs to happen with God.

272

:

The same thing needs to happen with our

relationships in the church, that they

273

:

should continually be getting deeper and

deeper, but you have to live that way.

274

:

And that's living by the

spirit, walking in the spirit.

275

:

And he says, and he says, if you are led

by the spirit, You're not under the law.

276

:

In other words, you know, I mean there's

a whole lot there that we don't have time

277

:

to tension between the law and the spirit.

278

:

But, but what I really want to just draw

the focus on right now is walking in

279

:

the spirit and being led by the spirit.

280

:

What is the spirit leading you to?

281

:

What is he trying to Convert

you to or change in your heart.

282

:

What is he trying to show you and How

is he want you to grow if you thought

283

:

about that if you were sit down and

write a list of what does the spirit?

284

:

Of God want me to grow in what

does the spirit of God want me to

285

:

know better or understand better?

286

:

What is it when I read the

scriptures stop and ask yourself?

287

:

What is he telling me here?

288

:

Not just what does it say, and who

was the audience, and what year

289

:

was it written, and what's the,

what's the hermeneutics behind it?

290

:

Okay, great, but more importantly,

what is God telling me here?

291

:

What is he showing me here?

292

:

That's what spirituality is all about.

293

:

So we read in Romans 8, back, and

we've read this before, but he says,

294

:

God raised Jesus from death, and if

God's Spirit lives in you, He will

295

:

also give life to your bodies that die.

296

:

Yes, God is the one who raised Christ

from death and he will raise you to

297

:

life through his spirit living in you.

298

:

Through how?

299

:

How does he do all this?

300

:

Through his spirit living in you.

301

:

You realize you have the

spirit of God in you?

302

:

I want you to think

about that for a second.

303

:

The spirit of God is in you.

304

:

Yeah.

305

:

Yeah.

306

:

He really is.

307

:

Are you listening to him?

308

:

Are you aware of him?

309

:

Are you paying attention?

310

:

That's what transformation, formation,

spiritual development is all about,

311

:

is getting better in tune with that.

312

:

And that's where we're going.

313

:

We're going to be talking specific.

314

:

But I can say this, I can say this now.

315

:

It's about Bible reading, memorizing

scripture, prayer, meditating

316

:

on his word, listening to God,

practice, practice, practice.

317

:

It's about constantly

practicing what we're reading.

318

:

Read the Bible.

319

:

What did you read that you don't do?

320

:

How can you start doing it?

321

:

That's giving yourself

over to the Spirit of God.

322

:

And we say, well, do you mean like

the Spirit talking like I hear voices?

323

:

No, reading the scriptures.

324

:

Sometimes you will get thoughts

in your mind, and sometimes

325

:

they'll be very clear from God.

326

:

And sometimes you will know something

is and the way you can check it

327

:

because there's also evil spirits Is

by does it line up with the scriptures?

328

:

Does it line up with what jesus did?

329

:

but it's being aware of that in acts

chapter 4 says In verse 31 after they

330

:

prayed the place where they were meeting

was shaken And they were all filled

331

:

with the holy spirit and spoke the

word of god boldly Make no mistake.

332

:

It was the holy spirit that

move the church forward.

333

:

How much will the church move forward

if the Holy Spirit is being ignored?

334

:

If we're not paying

attention to the Holy Spirit?

335

:

Not much.

336

:

Even Jesus couldn't perform many miracles

because of their lack of faith, right?

337

:

What does a lack of faith do?

338

:

It makes you ignore the Holy Spirit.

339

:

It makes you ignore God.

340

:

It makes you read the scriptures,

but you get nothing out of it.

341

:

It's just boring.

342

:

It's blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

343

:

It doesn't change you.

344

:

But when we're learning to pay attention,

and that's what meditation is, is

345

:

you're learning to pay attention, to

contemplate, to think about what is

346

:

the saying, what is it saying to me?

347

:

What is it saying to my life?

348

:

What am I being called to do?

349

:

And allowing God to change you.

350

:

praying before you read your Bible.

351

:

God, speak to me.

352

:

Show me father.

353

:

Change me.

354

:

Change my heart, God.

355

:

Give God your heart.

356

:

Tell him, get on your knees

and say, God, here's my heart.

357

:

Do whatever you want with it.

358

:

I give my life to you.

359

:

I give my body to you.

360

:

I give my soul, my spirit, my mind,

my heart, everything to you, God.

361

:

Tell him that.

362

:

And ask Him to guide you along.

363

:

And He will.

364

:

There's this trinity here that's behind

all of, all of what spirituality is.

365

:

It's prayer, conversing, dialoguing,

sharing, connecting with God.

366

:

On even a vocal level.

367

:

A mind level.

368

:

Sharing and speaking to God.

369

:

How much time we sit and

just think about God.

370

:

Amen.

371

:

Thank Him.

372

:

It's journaling, writing down

everything you're thankful to God for.

373

:

I challenge you to do it.

374

:

Write down, journal in a piece of

paper five things you're grateful

375

:

to God before you were five.

376

:

Five things before you were ten.

377

:

Five things in your teens.

378

:

Five things as a young person.

379

:

It will change you.

380

:

It will change your heart.

381

:

It will change your mind.

382

:

It will make you more connected to God.

383

:

I guarantee you.

384

:

Do this every day.

385

:

The word is another one.

386

:

Just reading and stopping.

387

:

And there's a fancy term you're

going to hear Lectio Divina.

388

:

It's becoming this popular thing

that people do at church where

389

:

they go over scriptures repeatedly.

390

:

It's not just a trick.

391

:

It's not just a little trick to

get everybody thinking spiritually.

392

:

It's actually meditating on God's word.

393

:

It's taking the time to read something

and really think about it and then

394

:

read it again and pray about it and

then read it again and pray about it.

395

:

And then the third one

is practice or practice.

396

:

Practice is just a fancy way of

saying practice is doing what it says.

397

:

The Bible says that those who are

mature, recognized, and they grow

398

:

because of their constant practice.

399

:

'cause constantly putting this into

practice, trying to do what I read.

400

:

And God giving me the strength

and the ability to do it.

401

:

Whether it's to love my enemies, whether

it's to forgive somebody who hurt me,

402

:

whether it's to be find peace in the

midst of trouble, whether it's to be

403

:

healed from my hurts in the past or to

be set free of addictions or problems

404

:

that have that have wracked my life, you

know that are ruining my life, whether

405

:

it's to love more to be not, you know,

the the all that's the all of this.

406

:

is part of growing spiritually.

407

:

These are the practices.

408

:

And there are many spiritual

disciplines and we're going to be

409

:

giving classes on all these things.

410

:

Spiritual formation is a term

you're going to hear a lot.

411

:

What is that?

412

:

Letting God form your heart.

413

:

Letting God form your mind.

414

:

Spiritual development.

415

:

What is that?

416

:

Well, that's who we are

from birth to death, right?

417

:

There's, there's a classic saying,

you're going to hear me say it a

418

:

lot, who we are is God's gift to us.

419

:

Who we become is our gift to God.

420

:

That's spiritual development.

421

:

Who do you become in your life and

whatever many years you're given on

422

:

this planet, whether it's 20 years,

50 years, 80 years, a hundred years,

423

:

who you become is your gift to God.

424

:

That's spiritual development becoming more

and more like Jesus spiritual transition.

425

:

There are times that we hit plateaus.

426

:

And we have to work through it.

427

:

There's a thing called the

dark night of the soul.

428

:

It's when there's times where we

hit a wall and we don't see God,

429

:

we don't feel God, we feel worldly

or whatever, and we have to work

430

:

through that and get through it.

431

:

Get through the darkness

back to the light.

432

:

There's a prayer of affirmation,

statements of affirmation, and that's

433

:

reminding us repeatedly who we are.

434

:

Silence and solitude, getting

away, spending time just talking

435

:

to God, and spending time just

being quiet and listening to God.

436

:

There's lament, which is how we process

our pain and our hurts in life, that

437

:

there's a very strong biblical pattern.

438

:

That for the most part we're

not even aware of most of us

439

:

have no idea what lament is.

440

:

There will be a class on that Meditation

affirmation Journaling all of these

441

:

are tools practicing Even rest Sabbath

rest, you know taking a day to just

442

:

completely rest and spend time with

God, spend time with family, enjoy

443

:

each other, not work, not do homework,

not do school work, excuse me, not

444

:

school work, not do job work, not be,

not do any kind of work for a day.

445

:

That doesn't mean you don't

have to do your homework.

446

:

Do it the day before, do it the day after.

447

:

So mindfulness, prayer, fasting, scripture

study, Lectio Divina, service to others.

448

:

These are all, these are all practices

that help us grow spiritually.

449

:

So we're going to be

talking about these things.

450

:

We're going to be learning

about these things together.

451

:

This is all going to help us on our

spiritual journey with one another.

452

:

Um, I'm going to be coming out with

a bulletin that's going to give a lot

453

:

of, uh, great resources from books to

read, apps, websites, all that kind

454

:

of stuff to help us grow spiritually.

455

:

And that's going to be under a

bulletin called Under the Broom Tree.

456

:

And lastly, if you want to keep learning

more and you want to get more materials

457

:
